Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain And Loose Stools?
My seventeen year old is having abdominal pain in the mid abdominal area which is worse in standing or prone position, if knees are pulled up or sitting it is better. She describes as sharp pain, she has had some loose stools. Is this most likely gastroenteritis?
I am sorry to hear about your daughter’s condition of having abdominal pain and loose stools. It is most likely viral gastroenteritis or stomach flu. In cases like this, it is important to prevent dehydration. In my practice I give to my patients oral rehydration salts which I advise to take in amounts to replace the losses from the loose stools. I also advise to avoid fatty, sugary foods and avoid anti-diarrheal over the counter medications.
However, conditions like this, you have to watch out for the presence of blood or fat in your daughter’s stool as this may be due to bacterial gastroenteritis. You also have to watch out if there is migration of the pain to mid to lower right abdominal area, high fever and loss of appetite accompanied by nausea and vomiting as this are early signs of appendicitis. In these cases, It is better to see your local physician since this platform is limited and i won't be able to do a complete physical examination.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
