What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain During Menstruation?

I experience severe pain during my periods (1st and 2nd day), moderate yet sharp pain on my 3rd and 4th day. Beyond this i experience pain often in between my cycle accompanied by a dull ache in my lower abdomen. This is happening for an year now. all my sonography reports are clear and have no abnormalities nor signs of endometriosis. No signs of UTI or gastric trouble. what could possibly explain this pain?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear thanks for the question.

I share your concerns. Some crampy pain is common in periods and it happens to majority of women. It is because uterus contracts to expel out the menstrual blood. These contraction produce the pain. It is not a disease or pathological problem.

It is a physiological process. I advise my patients to take pain killer(mefenemic acid---- meftal plus) to relive the pain. You can take this medicine once in 12 hours during your periods. This is the only management in your case as all reports are normal.

I hope i have clarified your queries. Please write for follow up queries. I wish you happy periods. Kindly write a feedback. Thank you
