What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain When Diagnosed With Diverticulitis?

My mom has been diagnosed with diverticulitus, yesterday her pain subsided, today its three times worse. She saw her doctor who told her she had a tear in her vaginal/colon wall. They subsequently had her make an appointment for a colonoscopy in ten days. I think it s an emergency, am I wrong?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Diverticulitis is an emergency if there is a rupture or if the tear is of full thickness ie, through the entire depth of the colon wall making a hole.
If its a superficial erosion then it can be managed on an intensive basis although it necessarily does not have to be a medical emergency.
This might be a possible cause of intense abdominal pain
I would advise you to wait for the colonoscopy results and then proceed.
I find this answer helpful
