What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain With Short Periods?

Hi I want to consult a Gynecologist - My wife is suffering from a severe pain on the down left side of her stomach. Her period came one day then stopped and she is having lots of pain and claiming that when she touch the place she feel a kind of Ball.

I am sorry for her situation. It might be from the menstruation however if it so severe than she can got to er to get medical help and to do an abdominal ultrasound.
