What Causes Severe Acid Reflux In The Middle Of The Night?

Woke up in the middle of the night with reflux so severe that it was burning my throat and causing me to cough as is some had gone into my windpipe. Took about an hour or so for the burning sensation to go away. Plus, every time I coughed it would make my lungs burn. Slept sitting up. This happened 5 hours or more after eating. Any ideas what is happening?
