What Causes Severe Acne After Taking Metoprolol Succinate?

Hi, I have been recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and have been taking carbimazole 6 times 5mg daily and also metoprolol succinate 95mg daily. I have been getting severe acne with the medication. Is it possible that the medication is causing the acne?

Hello,

Medicines for thyroid do not cause acne. But if you had acne previously then it can be worsened due to clogging of the pores. Do continue to take the medicines but take care of your hygiene. Take regular bath and avoid the use of chemical-based cosmetics. Avoid make-up and perfumed products.

If Metoprolol Succinate is taken for more than 6 months, then it can cause side effects like acne. Taking steam inhalation in the face will help to clear acne. You can also take a course of antibiotics like Doxycycline-100mg. Taking boiled food, adequate water, green vegetables, fruits and berries will help to prevent occurrence of acne.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
