What Causes Severe And Painful Cough With Dark Brown Or Greenish Mucus?

I am having excessive coghing, with only minimal productive results. When I do get results, it s small amounts of dark brown or greenish mucus. I ve had 2 chest x-rays which show no pneumonia but, my white cell count has gone from 15,000 to 29,000 from Friday PM to Monday AM. My fever has generally been within healthy ranges, but once went up to nearly 100 degrees. I ve been in the hospital from Friday to Monday AM. They are doing cultures of my blood which should be available on Wednesday. Also, my cough has become extremely painful, beginning in the lower area of the left, back chest, and has grown less critical and localized to include left back around to underarm area. While quite intense, it s less knife-like but remains quite sharp. Any thoughts?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe and painful cough with dark brown or greenish mucus which seems to be due to severe infection of respiratory tract and due to infection of GI tract. As your WBC count is getting marked increased which is due to presence of infection in body. It could be due to poorer and compromised immunity of body.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to to consult pulmonologist/ gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order blood test, stool test, ultrasound or take history to confirm the diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe antibacterial or antiviral depending upon the diagnosis. You should take cough expectorants. For now eat light and non spicy in small and frequent meals and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain. Avoid intake of cold carbonated beverages and outside food.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
