What Causes Severe Back Spasms And Breathlessness After A Head Injury?

I took a fall about 3-4 days ago. During the fall, I hit my head and have since been experiencing sever back spasms in the spinal column that go around to my side - its like a burning crescendo of pain and it makes it very difficult to lie down or sit up at it s worse the pain is a 10. I notice at times that I am short of breath and have had to increase the use of my asthma pump not to mention the strange pain in my face. Can someone please help me.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The pain related to trauma tends to increase by day 2 to 3 then it plateaus and eventually usually starts to resolve. It should not affect your asthma control directly unless the pain is causing significant emotional distress which is affecting asthma control. Emotional distress or stress can precipitate an asthma attack.

Back spasms can be due to trauma of these muscles and this would be helped with anti inflammatory pain killers (ibuprofen, naproxen, voltaren), muscle relaxants and warm compress to the affected area 2 to 3 times a day. The abnormal sensation in the face may be due to temporary nerve injury which can occur with trauma. In light of the different symptoms that you are experiencing, it would be best for you to see your doctor for an assessment which should include history as well as physical examination. Imaging (x-rays or CT), may or may not be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
