What Causes Severe Backache On The Right While Suffering From IBS?

Hi, I have had IBS for years. My symptoms have worsened now that I may of sjogren s syndrome. I was taking several different medications for this, but have stopped because of the pain in my back getting worse. My gut pain presents in my stomach in the front right (burning pain), but my severe pain is in my mid right back to the right of my spine. This pain has come and gone through the years, but has persisted recently and I am miserable. I have gone to probably a dozen doctors over the last 20 years and no one seems to know what is causing this pain in my back. I know it is caused by food, but I do have to eat. I don t drink coffee and weight about 110 and am active, although it is difficult especially when the back pain is bad. Yesterday I had a bad bought of cramping which caught me at the grocery store. I am normally constipated, but yesterday was not. It is difficult to sleep because of the back pain and it is difficult to be around people because of the back pain. Sorry for rambling, but I just want to feel better. I have tried some pepto-bismol, but that is not working. About 7 years ago I was check for pancreatitis, which I do not have, at Beth Israel Deaconess. About 1 1/2 years ago I went back to Beth Israel for this same pain in my back. I saw a different doctor (my other dr. no longer works there) who is an expert on pancreatitis and he said my pain is not pancreatitis because of where the pain is located in my back. He just told me to take gaviscon, but said he could not help. My other symptom as of late and I have had this before, but now it is worse is the chills with the stomach and (or referred pain as I have read and told by a dr. years ago) back pain. Any idea what is going on with me? I could really use some relief . . . also, I went to the ER once with this which was pointless. Thank you. Marianne

Hello,

It may not be related to IBS. As a first line management, you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief. If symptoms persist better to consult an orthopaedician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
