What Causes Severe Burning Sensation During Feraheme Infusion Via Port?

Hi I have been receiving feraheme infusion via port for approximately 3mos now. Yesterday s infusion when started, burned horribly . To the point I made them stop. I have received this med for years, just recently through the port due to poor peripheral access. After further diluted it was started again with some burning. Stopped, after receiving two. .5 doses of Ativan were they able to complete infusion. Iso this a normal side effects. This was also the first time it was given on a drip not a push.

Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, usually if you had not been allergic to injectable iron before it's less likely to be the cause but sometimes cannula or IV access isn't giving adequate flow due to position or narrow bore.

However, local latex allergies secondary to the cannula may cause such burning sensation. Also if dilution was in potassium containing fluid and not in normal saline may also cause burning locally.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin
