What Causes Severe Chills In A Child?

I have a 12yo female with no known health problems however, sometimes without warning she will begin to cross her arms and shake as though she had just entered a freezer. There is no change in mental capacity or communication. It is not a seizure. Have you ever heard of this? Todd

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Chills are caused by muscles contract and relax rapidly as the body tries to generate to increase body temperature. A fever may follow chills indicating infection. Some causes of chills with no fever:

-prescription drugs
-bladder infection
-anaemia (treatment depends on the cause)
-malnutrition
-hypothyroidism
-low blood sugar(most commonly in diabetes)
-spider bites

1. Black widow- bite is red with two fang marks
2. Brown recluse- blue/purple rash surrounded by a white ring which is outlined by a red ring; there is a liquid-filled blister in the middle.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
