What Causes Severe Constipation Along With Mucus In Stools?

I have had a constipation problem since my early twenties. In the last three years it has become increasingly worse. I will go weeks without a movement. When I finally do, there is white thick mucus covering the constipated stool . After the initial movement, I will have a bout of diarrhea within the following hour. My stomach stays bloated. I have a continued achy felling in my stomach and occational right sided pains that come and go. I am wondering if I should be alarmed by these symptoms and what i should do. Thanks

Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM.
Incomplete data: Age, gender, medication intake, etc.

I have gone through your problems diligently, since your problems are there since 3 yrs or so and they are getting worsening day by day, constipation with alternate diarrhea, mucus covering the constipated stool, I am of the opinion that you must be seen by a doctor preferable a gastroenterologist to rule out the following: Irritable or Inflammatory bowel diseases (like ulcerative colitis or crohn's disease), or an early malignancy involving the colon.

Meanwhile increase the intake of fruits, vegetables and oral fluids, daily exercise, avoid red meat or alcohol (if you consume).
The above measures will relieve your constipation if it is of functional origin due to lack of dietary fiber, lack of exercise, or inability to drink more water, etc.

If you are taking certain medications like antacids, calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, then alternative medications should be prescribed by your doctor to prevent the complications.

Hope these suggestions could be of great help to you in seeking an early treatment.
Take care.
A feed back is appreciated.
