What Causes Severe Cough And Gagging?

I am 23 years old and I am a smoker. I am wondering about a cough that I just recently developed and I don t know the cause of it. It has me concerned for the fact that I randomly start coughing and as I m coughing it feels flem or something is about to come up and it sort of does but when it does I start gagging uncontrollably every time this cough happens. I feel it might be getting worse but I m not sure as I ve been having to go to crouch over the toilet because it feels like I m gonna puke and nothing comes out and sometimes the gag is so bad i end up burping with it but again...nothing comes out. When it first happened about a week or 2 ago, I gagged so bad that I threw up and it was pretty bad. Ever since though, it has not happened again but I feel the coughs are starting to happen more and I am stuck over the toilet gagging for about 2 mins. What is wrong with me?

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe cough and gagging which is due to severe upper respiratory tract infection. The infection is probably a strep throat. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to start with course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. You should get an x ray of the chest. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin at least for 10 days along with mucolytic agents. Doctor may also refer you to chest specialist. Go for complete blood count. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods. For now do warm saline rinses , take rest. Avoid giving cold beverages. You should take mast cell stabilizers to prevent from infection.
