What Causes Severe Cough And Stuffy Nose?

Can you tell me the best over the counter cold medicine,i have a lot of flem,drainage from the nose,and the cough is horrible,my muscles are all sore from coughing..... don t have the money to go to the doctor...I do have heart disease....thanks..Rick

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe cough and stuffy nose which could be due to allergies , hay fever , nasal polyps , chronic sinusitis , tumors and a deviated septum. The symptoms can also occur due to post nasal drip. In your case it seems to be allergic reaction. Apply warm compresses on nose , keep your head elevated while sleeping, take steam and take benadryl twice a day. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan , nasal endoscopy , viral culture test and blood tests . Doctor may prescribe antibacterial or anti viral depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestant or expectorant . Doctor may also prescribe anti allergic or refer you to chest specialist .
