What Causes Severe Cough While Suffering From Esophageal Cancer?

My brother had esophageal cancer and had hem ad radiation to the affected area, but it appears secindary to the radiation tx he has esophageal strictures and also resultant hypersecretions- unsure if only from the salivary glands, but i think maybe also fro damaged esophagus,He will occasionally have paroxysms of coughing, sometimes quite severe, becoming dyspneic, and more anxious which increases tissue constriction. He is a terrible patient, needs to drink 2-3 liters of water a day but won t. I m thinking of talking to his oncologist to recommend benztropine to maybe help dry u some of the secretions.
