What Causes Severe Cramping During Period?

hello, over the weekend i was not feeling well. My period had started, i was having major cramps (usually have cramps) , but these doubled me over. Slept constantly. My girlfriend said that this is one sign that my periods are coming to an end. I am 42. I started at 9. Any ideas what this was all about?
