What Causes Severe Cramps After Ileoanal Reservoir Surgery?

Hi. I had ileonal reservoir pouch surgery 15 years ago. However, for the last two years I have been having cramps every other day. The cramps are little above the belly button. I have tried buscopan, dicetel, pepto bismol, and nexium. They only help a little bit. Any advice?

Hi,

Severe cramps after ileoanal reservoir surgery may be caused by several factors, including:
* Inflammation or infection of the surgical site
* Adhesions (scar tissue) forming in the abdominal cavity
* Stool impaction in the reservoir
* Muscle spasms in the intestinal or abdominal muscles
* Nerve damage or irritation in the area
Anal strictures (narrowing of the anus)
* Inadequate healing of the surgical site
* Inflammatory bowel disease

It's essential to consult with the surgeon who performed the surgery to determine the cause of the cramps and to develop an appropriate treatment plan. They may recommend medication, physical therapy, or further surgery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
