What Causes Severe Cramps In Hips With Weakened Legs?

Had sudden severe cramp in hip area that stopped my heavy work for the day. Pain gets worse at night and go to urgent care. They think it tendons strained. I notice next day about 50% strength loss in upper leg. Begin to fall when trying to run or stoop low. Now it s been 18 days with some improvement but it s very slow. The cramping is almost gone but a lot of the weakness remains.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Weakened legs with severe cramps / pain are commonly due to drop attacks that may be caused by developing issues in the heart, brain, inner ears or psychological / mental problems, Guillain–Barr syndrome, etc. Other medical conditions that can cause it are spinal cord compression, tumor, epidural abscess, peripheral neuropathy, neurological disorder, slipped disc, MS, thyroid issues, diabetes, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a Neurologist or a GP. Get blood tests, urinalysis, NCV tests, nerve biopsy, imaging (CT, MRI, EEG) tests done to detect the pathology causing the symptoms.

You will be treated accordingly. If diabetic, control your blood glucose level at all cost. Take well balanced, home made food rich in vitamin E, B6, B12, folic acid, minerals and proteins. Conservative treatment combined with physical therapy and surgery if required is effective. Stay well hydrated, sodium, potassium depletion may also cause weakness of legs and fatigue. Take acetaminophen, one SOS when required for relief. Get treated at the earliest, take care.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
