Hello,
Cramps in the inner thigh may be due to
peripheral artery disease (PAD),
spinal stenosis, metabolic problems, acute kidney failure, Addison's disease (
adrenal insufficiency), anemia,
chronic kidney disease, cirrhosis (scarring of the liver),
hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid),
hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid),
type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, blood pressure drugs, cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), dialysis, diuretics (water retention relievers), oral contraceptives, dehydration, diarrhea, muscle fatigue, nerve damage as from cancer treatments, osteoarthritis (disease causing the breakdown of joints), Parkinson's disease or pregnancy.
Treatment depends upon the cause of the disease. Preliminary steps of treatment are to avoid dehydration. Practice muscle stretching exercises daily. Try pulling the top of your foot on the affected side toward your head while your leg remains in a straightened position. This will also help ease a back thigh (hamstring) cramp. For front thigh cramps (quadriceps), use a chair to steady yourself and pull your foot on the affected side up toward your buttock.
Apply heat or cold. Take tab. Neurobion forte 1daily for at least 3months. Also, take tab. Evion once daily for 3 months. Eating a balanced diet with drinking large amounts of water would help. During the episode of cramp, gentle massage would help relieve the cramp.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
