What Causes Severe Diarrhea And Blood In Stool?

My very healthy 70yr old mom had excruciatingly painful diarrhea and later that day also came large blood clots... This was all day Sunday and it was getting better by Monday night! She did talk to a Dr.and of course she had to tell him she s never had a colinoscopy! Do you know what could ve brought this on? We were wondering if food poisoning could do this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Food poisoning can cause blood but not commonly. This would occur with a severe bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract.

Most cases of diarrhea are due to viral infection and not associated with blood.

The question about colonoscopy is valid , not just to rule out malignant lesions of the colon but also for diverticular disease

This is common in older persons and is due to the formation of outpockets in the colon.
These can sometimes become infected leading to pain and bleeding.

It would be best that she is seen and assessed.

I hope this helps
