What Causes Severe Diarrhea While Suffering From Multiple Myeloma?

Mother who is 91 years old, has been diagnosed multiple myeloma, has had severe diarrhea for about 6 weeks. Some nights she wakes with the bed full and is unable to stop the flow. She will not tell her dr and I would like to write him a note about this so he will know about it. The myeloma has been the same numbers for over 1.5 years, not getting any worse. I always attend the dr visits with her.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be of acute infective diarrhea.
I would suggest you take plenty of oral fluids, ORS solution, I would suggest omeprazole once a day for a week. (it is available as an over the counter medication).
I cannot be 100% sure that it is not appendicitis unless a physical exam and ultrasound are done. I would suggest you visit your doctor to get these done if you have a fever, severe persistent pain/ blood in stools.
You also need to visit your doctor if cramps persist to get a prescription for antispasmodic meds.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
