What Causes Severe Diarrhea?

My daughter, age 25, has been having severe diarrhea for the last 3 days. She was running a low grade fever the first day & had hives. She went to the doctor & was prescribed prednisone for the hives & told to eat a bland diet. The hives have subsided & the fever is gone but she is still have pretty bad diarrhea. She went back to the doctor today & was told that it is a possible food allergy & to follow the BRAT diet. Does this sound like an allergy?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I don't think this sounds like allergy. It seems like gastrointestinal tract infection and hives can be a symptom of it also. I think she can use Loperamid for diarrhea and probiotics to re-establish the intestinal flora.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
