What Causes Severe Dry Cough After Taking Meloxicam?

I take Coumadin for mechanical mitral valve. Have just been prescribed meloxicam 7.5 mg daily. Have today been coughing that dry cough I can t stop. My pharmacist recommended an OTC cough syrup for diabetics and people with high blood pressure. I have used it carefully for about 8 years since my open heart surgery, but when I looked at the bottle tonite it says do not take w/an mao. Am I safe with meloxicam?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Meloxicam is safe if used for a few days only. Take antacids after meals.

A dry cough is due to increased hyperacidity of the stomach. Coumadin is aggravating such problems.

Immediate consultation with a gastroenterologist and run upper endoscopy to rule out stomach ulcer.

Do not forget to use antacids meanwhile. Drink plenty of water. Avoid oily chilly spicy foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
