Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Dry Mouth And Shortness Of Breath?
Last night I awoke to an extremely dry mouth and gasping for breath. When I got myself fully awake, I went to the bathroom and drank water to moisten my mouth. I do not have swollen ankles but have been feeling slightly foggy and off balance in the morning. I have a history of blocked arteries in the heart. I think I may be having sinus issues but previously have had water retention with the same foggy and off balance symptoms. Could this gasping be heart related?
Heart problems can give the feeling of gasping for breath but when it starts to happen it generally happens regularly (every night) and is better when you get up and gets worse again when you lay down.
If your gasping for breath happened only once and it did not repeat when you went back to lay down very likely it is not from the heart problems.
When a patient has a chronic condition he might experience anxiety related to it and this might be the reason why you had that dry mouth and gasping for breath.
If this experience of gasping for breath is repeated (did not happen only once or comes back when you lay down) you will need to talk with your doctor to rule out that it is due to the heart problems.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
