What Causes Severe Dryness On The Body Despite Taking Benadryl For Hives?

For past 4 months i ve had hives over a large part of my body and have taken benadryl and claritin which helped treat the symptoms. Its now changed into my skin turning red and becoming very dry and hot to the touch. Benadryl and claritin help only marginally - yesterday I had a cortezone (sp???) injection at urgent care which helped marginally but now the redness has returned.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi.
As per your case history of urticaria, my treatment advice is -
1. Avoid fast food and food with artificial colors.
2. Don't take any medication without consulting a doctor as it may worsen the condition.
3. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on affected region twice daily.
4. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine twice daily for 45 days along with hydroxyzine 10mg once at night.
5. Other treatment options are oral steroid, colchicine, cyclosporine taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Thanks.
