What Causes Severe Edema, Breathlessness And Chest Discomfort After Kidney Stone Removal?

A little over 2 weeks ago, I was hospitalized for dehydration and kidney stone. I stayed 2 nights, passed the stone and then went home. Within 24 hours, I had severe edema, shortness of breath, chest discomfort and had gained over 20lbs. Returned to ER, they hosptialized me for Congestive Heart Failure. Fuid on the lungs and around the heart. Treated with Lasix, Lovenox, ECHO came out clear. Was doing pretty good but now Im back to shortness of breath and a little chest discomfort with activity. Is this something I need to go to ER for? Or follow up with my Dr on Monday?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Recurrent attack of breathlessness, severe edema and chest discomfort in a diagnosed patient of congestive heart failure needs to have proper treatment to remove the extra fluid accumulated in body.
The cause in your case is obviously clear and related to inability of your heart to pump properly thus causing back pressure on lungs and the symptoms.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Rush to ER again to have emergency treatment and then consult a Cardiologist to have proper management. You will need a long course or may be a lifelong course of medicines
All these things are not related to your kidney stone that has already passed out so no worry about it unless there is a problem with kidney functions.
Other causes like anemia and hypo-proteinemia add on to the problems hence should be corrected well if found to be below normal levels.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
