Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking Metoprolol 25mg 1 per day for an extended period of time. In the last 2-3 days the readings have been averaging approx. to 165/90. Also in the last 5 hours I have a fever averaging 101.3. Normal average is 97.3. Can I double up on the Metoprolol one time? Is it safe?
Metoprolol helps in lowering the blood pressure in hypertensive patients.
There are few side effects which are commonly seen and are not considered serious as there are benefits of the drug for the patient more than adverse effects and your doctor is well aware of it.
Fever is not a side effect of the drug. For fever, paracetamol can help but I would advise you to not increase the dosage of metoprolol by yourself without consulting your doctor.
Your doctor will decide if there is a need for dose adjustment. Make sure you take the medicine on time without missing the dose.
If you feel there are symptoms like anxiety, chest pain and sudden increase in blood pressure then go to ER so that it will be managed well by the doctors.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
