What Causes Severe Flatulence And Mucus Discharge From The Anus?

A couple of days ago I felt like I had to have a bowel movement. I sat down and very shortly let out a big burst of air. What made this flatulence different than any other was it sounded more like a balloon popping. It even made me laugh as I acknowledged that it was not the typical sound I was used to. I continued to sit and wait for the movement to begin. Nothing happened, so I figured I just needed to let out some air. I grabbed some toilet paper to clean myself. I wiped once and then was about to fold the tissue over for a second pass. That was when I noticed that what was on the tissue from swipe number one resembled what you would expect to see if someone with a cold had blown their nose. I touched the substance and it definitely seemed like mucus. Swipe number two produced nothing and I have been unable to duplicate the event. I have not noticed anything abnormal with my stool. I had been having some issues with what I assume is hemorrhoids as I am a truck driver- swelling, itching, some blood on the toilet paper etc. Should I assume the mucus is a by-product of these issues?

Hi,

First of all, it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, it can be local infection leading to pus contained discharge or mucous. However, you need to have a per rectal exam done by a surgeon and if needed proctoscopy as well. A barium enema may also be needed. Stool microscopy can also be helpful.

Meanwhile for pain if any OTC analgesics like acetaminophen can be used or stool softeners like lactulose may also be used.
