What Causes Severe Fluctuation In Platelet Levels?

I am a 66 year old male , moderately obese@ 224 # . I had smoked for 40 years ,but quit 7 years ago. Two years later symptoms of c.o.p.d., manifested .. After diagnosis I was placed on a inhaler(formeterol) and Spiriva. for unknown reasons after a month of prescribed use began to have severe body swelling , apparently I was holding fluid, and experiencing respiratory distress. My primary care placed me on O2 for several hours ,did blood tests and prescribed medication to assist in evacuating the fluid,as well as changing the repiratory inhaler medication to Symbicort....I was then directed to a hemocult Oconologist , who has been physically examining me for the last two years as well as countless blood tests at a minimum every 3 months ... apparently my white cell/ platelets levels make large swings up and down...The isn t any internal bleeding , no diabetes etc.... levels have ranged from 400 to a present count of 98...Now we re back to monthly testing.. The question : what can possibly be causing these wild swings?

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
as you have given your symptoms it appears to be renal problem causing generalized o edema. smoking for 40years but left for 7years generally damage is reversible. coped symptoms are expected for which treatment has been recommended. they have refereed to oncologist so there must be indication for that. there must be some indication of malignancy. abide by his advise there was leukocytosis indicating some infection. over all youare improving and there is no deterioration of condition.
