What Causes Severe Headache, Neck Pain And Dizziness?

My 44 year old son-in-law has had severe daily headaches or over three months. On three occasions he has awakened and asked his wife to help him to the bathroom because he can t get his legs going. She said on each occasion one eye wouldn t open and his speech was slurred. He went to the ER and was told he has Complex Migraines. He has never been one to have headaches. He has been on Depakote with no relief. They then switched him to a Calcium Blocker also. No relief. The headaches are daily now with a very sore neck too. Tests including an MRI disclosed no tumors or other abnormalities. Neurology tests were negative. He had another incident this morning, slurred speech, couldn t walk without help, severe headache, neck pain and in the past few days has been having severe dizziness especially if bending over. The GP has ordered and taken a neck x-ray and is hoping insurance will allow a neck CT Scan. I asked about the carotids and was told the ultra-sound in the hospital showed things were clear. He is unable to work and is miserable. We are waiting to see if he can get the additional scans and perhaps a referral to a Head and Neck doctor. Could there be two things going on here? I wondered about Labyrinthitis as a possible cause for the dizziness, but this wouldn t account for the headaches and the eye problem and weakness he has. His wife says he has a hard time making words when he has these incidents. TIA s? They said no at the hospital. Any suggestions would be appreciated as we are getting nowhere and he is getting progressively worse since this has been going on about three months now. Depression is starting to set in as well. Thank you for your time.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As first-line management, you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief.
If symptoms persist, better to consult a neurologist and plan for an MRI brain to rule out possible intracranial (inside the brain) causes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
