What Causes Severe Headaches Along With Throbbing Sensation At Temples?

I experienced a sudden blinding headache, very painful that left me feeling a little weak and out of it . The headache lasted only 15 - 20 seconds and was gone. My temples were throbbing and I could feel blood pulsing through the veins at my temples. What on earth was that?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Severe headache with throbbing pain can occur mainly due to migraine, tension headache or due to temporal arteritis. Other causes to be ruled out are cluster headache and also sinusitis. Temporal arteritis involves a swelling and thickening of the lining of the artery under the skin on the temple, or side of the head.

This condition can also cause jaw pain, scalp pain or temporary loss of vision. Treatment with corticosteroid is recommended to reduce the symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
