What Causes Severe Headaches And Painful Blisters At The Crease Of The Eyelid?

Hi. Four or five days ago, I started experiencing a headache (and I never have headaches). Then, my hair on the right side of my head began to hurt -- as if I was coming down with the flu. This morning I woke up and my right eye was swollen. There were small, painful blisters at the crease of my eyelid, as well as along the outside of my right eye (near where I had experienced an injury Thursday evening). Tonight I decided to research the Internet, hoping to find out what was going on with the blisters. Everything seemed to point to the shingles virus. I am 60 years old, and had the shingles shot a couple of years ago. However, I also have MS, so my immune system is already compromised and perhaps the shot did not work as well as expected. In any case, my “self-diagnosis” is the shingles virus and I’m worried about the location on my eyelid. An hour or so ago I spoke with my pharmacist and she told me not to put anything topical on my eyelid, however I could take over-the-counter pain medication if necessary. Because my doctor is not available on the weekends my only other option is the hospital’s ER. The pharmacist said if it is the shingles virus, I would probably be given antiviral medication. Web M.D. indicated I should see my doctor within three days in order to have that medication begin to help. Do you think I should go to the ER tonight, or tomorrow since the blisters are on my eyelid?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
The infection is 99% herpes zoster or shinghles.
Since it is located on your eye lid there is reason to be cautious since shinghles can involve the cornea,if you are having pain take a painkiller like combiflam(acetaminophone + ibuprofen) .
The specific treatment is Acyclovir which must be started orally within 72 hours of the appearance of the blister.
you should go to the ER since eye is a delicate organ.
