What Causes Severe Headaches Upon Waking Up In The Morning?

I have had chronic vague headaches usually in the morning upon waking. I have a few benign possibilities like caffeine desire, stress over the election, and needing a new eyeglass prescription in one eye. My doctor is having me get a cat scan of my head. This seems extreme and wonder if it s necessary before ruling out other things. I m nervous about all the radiation.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. The usual suspects, such as stress, caffeine craving and vision problems can explain the occasional headache, however a chronic headache, no matter how mild, should always be thoroughly investigated in order to rule out headaches that are caused by the mass compression effect in the brain. So yes, your doctor's recommendation for a cat scan is reasonable. It is always best to be on the safe side when it comes to symptoms like this.
It is also the reasonable thing to do to try and adopt a healthier and more stress free life style.

I hope this helps.
Wishing you all the best.
