What Causes Severe Intestinal Gas After Taking Aciphex?

I have been taking 20 mg of achiphex for several years. During the last 7 weeks I have had 3 bouts with severe gas. This last episode has lasted for 2 days and 3 nights and the pain is intense. I am wondering if I have something serious going on. I am usually pretty healthy, but am 71 year old female and do not enjoy this intense pain at times. The gas pain is so bad it makes up upper legs hurt. I get some relief by passing some rectal gas, but I am wondering if I am experiencing diverticulitis. I do have diverticulum and did just complete a long car ride and did eat some nuts, but I have eaten nuts before without problems. I did chew gum while driving which I do not usually do. I stopped taking the generic achiphex 3 days ago and am wondering how long I should wait to consult a doctor. I am on a vacation at my daughter s.

Hi,

If you don't feel Very sick, don't have a high-grade fever, and you are passing stool, it doesn't seem to be anything serious. However, the bout of gas and pain may indicate infection in the gut. More likely amoebiasis or giardiasis. Other possibilities like bacterial infections, diverticulitis cannot be ruled out though unlikely as the pain is not episodic in that but still possible. I would suggest you should see your doctor to prescribe you some antibiotics or drugs for amoebiasis like metronidazole if needed.
