What Causes Severe Itchiness In The Scalp After Using Hair Dye?

Hello, I recently dyed my hair & have noticed that my scalp has been really irritated. I thought maybe the stylist didn t wash out the dye well enough so I washed my hair. My entire head itches & hurts when I itch at the same time. This morning, I noticed a small bump behind my right ear that hurts when I press on it. It also kind of hurts when I sleep on it too. Could the two conditions have relevance to one another? And can you please tell me what is going on?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi. It could be due to allergy to components of hair dye. Most common culprit is Paraphenylenediamine (PPD). Right now, take antihistamine and mid potent steroid like mometasone in lotion form. It might take around 2-3 weeks for complete relief. Also, daily shampooing can help in getting rid of dye rapidly and hence, rapid relief.
For future, use PPD free hair dye only. Hope it helps
