What Causes Severe Itchiness On The Palm?

I suddenly developed extreme itching in both palms a couple of days ago. I had noticed the itching which was enough to cause me to wake up but could see no outward signs of a problem. Then, both palms showed a red area where the most intense itching was taking place. I applied some hydrocortisone salve two days ago but could see no real relief. Before going to bed last night, I used a Benadryl spray. That seemed to ease the itching but this morning I noticed that one of my palms now has what looks and feels like a blister. This is similar to a sunburn blister, it is tender (although I would not call it painful) and is still itching. I have not changed soaps or medications and am not aware of minor trauma (such as using a shovel or broom handle). What could be causing this?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe itchiness on the palm Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like contact dermatitis , allergic reaction due to certain cosmetic and side effects of certain medicine .

I would suggest you to clean that area properly with antimicrobial agent like betadine . Use of corticosteroid ointment is helpful. Also take over the counter anti histamine like benadryl.

Your symptoms will start resolving in 3-5 days. If it keeps on persisting visit dermatologist once to find out any hidden cause for your symptoms. Apply little pressure on that area with cotton dipped in warm water to ooze out the pus properly.

Take antibiotics orally to prevent further infection. Use calamine lotion on that to resolve itchiness . Also apply cold compresses on hand to reduce redness and itchiness .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
