Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Itching All Over The Body Despite Taking Prednisone?
I was recently hospitalized with pyelonephritis gram negative bacterial infection in both kidneys and sepsis. The bacteria was ecoli. Three weeks later, I now have itching that happens randomly but mostly in my hands and feet, but spreads to other areas of the body. There is no rash, but red streaks that appear. If I put pressure on a part of my body, it begins to itch. They put me on prednisone for the itching last Saturday and we then left for vacation. I have taken the entire dosage, but continue to itch so bad. Urgent care said if the steroids didn t work, I should have my kidneys and liver checked. I plan on seeing the doctor when we return home Saturday.
You should get your kidneys and liver checked. Also, you may need to get checked by a dermatologist because it can be a skin issue not much related to past pyelonephritis.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
