What Causes Severe Itching In The Head After A Head Injury?

My husband incurred a concussion last week. He hit the back of his head on a sandy surface after he was hit by a piece of metal which knocked him our of a truck. He had to get six stitches on the front of his head. Since his injury, his head has been extremely itchy. At first, we thought it may be that it was a few days since he had washed his hair really well due to not being able to get his head wet from the stitches. Now that his stitches are out, we cut the rest of his hair short and he was able to wash his head well, but the itching has continued. There does not seem to be a widespread ask or anything of the sort. Any suggestions on what we could do to help bring relief? Also, is this a common problem to have after a concussion? Thank you for your help!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your husband has received few stitches over the front of the head area and the wound is still healing. This can cause skin irritation in the surrounding area and is not a serious problem. With complete healing the itching will disappear however you need to get the wound area checked for any infection or foreign body. If a CT scan of the head has not been done then please discuss with your doctor and get a scan done if needed.
