What Causes Severe Itching On The Navel While On Treatment For Beta Strep?

I have been diagnosed with beta strep in my belly button and area just above my vagina, under a fold of skin. I have been on Penicillin for 20 days (500mg 3x day) and was just upped to 4x day for the third run of ten days. It is helping as the infection seems to be decreasing, but the itching is getting worse. Is this the best way to treat this and how can I stop the itching during the treatment time?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is nice to know that Penicillin is working and your infection is reducing. Continue to take the medication as prescribed. Do not scratch it even if you are getting the itching and wear cotton clothes that are loose fitting. You can apply Neomycin cream or Bactracin ointment locally to get rid of the itching.

However, if itching increase and the ointments don't seem to help it can be due to allergy then you should report to the treating doctor so that your medication can be changed, there are other substitutes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
