What Causes Severe Knee Pain And Swelling After A Loud Crack?
I have recently experienced severe knee pain, no fall was involved just walking to the kitchen when I heard a loud crack and extreme pain on the inside of the right knee. This happened a few months back and now my knee is 2 to 3 times the normal size and I can't go down steps and getting out of a chair is hard work.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM I have gone through your query. Loud crack sound , swelling and restriction of motion gives a suspicion of pathological fracture. A local examination by an orthopedic surgeon followed a x ray is needed to rule out that. Other possibilities are meniscal tear or ligament rupture with hematoma. If there is signs of those then MRI will be required to rule out that. You should splint and immobilize the leg and approach an orthopedician or to ER as soon as possible. You can apply ice pack, elevate the leg for reducing swelling and inflammation. Over the counter pain medications also will be helpful. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
