Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What is causing my knee to hurt at night? The pain is mostly behind the knee. I ve been told by my orthopedic dr. that the cartilage is pretty much gone in that knee. He talked to me about the fluid build up calling it a baker s cyst. The pain is getting worse and wakes me up each night. I ve had cortisone shots before - first one helped quite a bit. I had a second shot about a month ago and haven t really felt much relief from the nightly pain. Is there anything I can do to alleviate the situation without having a knee surgery?
A severe knee pain with swelling of the leg can be due to arthritis, bursitis or DVT. Proper diagnosis needs a direct examination and few investigations like X-ray and color Doppler of the leg. Till then mild pain killers, rest hot compress, application of local analgesic gel and a knee brace can help.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
