What Causes Severe Left-sided Leg Pain?

Hi I am a 55 year woman. For the past few months I have been waking up with server pains in my left leg around the shin area. The only way I can relieve the pain is by dangling my leg out of the bed or by walking around. The pain has been getting worse and usually comes on about 2-3 hours after I go to bed. I do not get the pain if I put my feet up while watching TV in the evening, only when I lay flat. I am slightly overweight at 13 stone and I m 5ft 7in tall. I spend a lot of time sitting as I work in an office. I have no varicose veins or redness around the area. Please let me know what you think it may be. Many thanks, Diane

Hi,

Since unable to examine you directly, the following is my opinion based on your symptoms:

1. At your age [55 years] it could be menopausal pain due to falling estrogen level resulting in magnesium deficiency and fluid imbalance.

2. Leg pain could be because of leg edema [peripheral edema] or can be caused by a problem with the circulatory system, lymphatic system, or the kidneys for which consultation with your primary care provider is essential who might also exclude possibilities like:
- Arterial: due to poor circulation in the arteries.
- Diabetic: due to high blood sugar.
- Vasculitic: due to any inflammatory disorder OR
- Traumatic: due to injury to the leg

3. One urgent medical condition which has to be immediately excluded, in the legs is DVT [deep vein thrombosis] so seek immediate medical intervention [vascular surgeon opinion] or visit an emergency room.

PS. The symptoms have to be carefully assessed by your doctor to ensure that whether it requires immediate medical attention or long-term therapy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
