What Causes Severe Leg Cramps While Sleeping?

Hi, I m having severe leg cramping while sleeping. The strange part of it is that its starts on BOTH legs at the same time....upper top thighs. Than migrates down to behind my knees....than my calf s. Than returns up both legs again. It takes about 10-15 min to complete the cycle. When it gets behind the knees, its so tight it pulls my legs up. I m always in tears by the time its complete. What can I do? Thank you

hi,
leg cramp may be metabolic (including hormonal)cause or neurogenic cause.

since you have complain on both the lower limb with same severity & simultaneously ,the main root should be commen. eg. at lower spinal level from where both lowerlimbs' nerve arise.

to know the exact cause, you may require
1) the x ray or MRI to see the spinal coloum
2)certain blood test that include hormone testing(eg..hypo/hyper thyroidism etc ),renal function test & liver function test to see metabolic disturbances.
I find this answer helpful
