What Causes Severe Leg Cramps With Busted Blood Vessels In The Lower Leg?

I am constantly waking up with severe leg cramps - calf and side of leg. Sometimes several times a night. Now I have noticed several busted blood vessels in lower leg, all radiating out from a central point. I am on 20mg of Atorvastatin for high cholesterol and have taken 1 Prolia shot (will get another in 5 months) for osteoporosis. What could be the cause?

Hi,

Noted your history of busted blood vessels in lower leg radiating from central point, severe leg cramps in calves and side of legs; taking 20 mg of atorvastatin and took one Prolia shot for osteoporosis.
As per the history you have given this following is the possibility.
Varicose veins causing congested blood in muscles and thus causing the muscle cramps.
DVT that is deep vein thrombosis should be ruled out.
Discuss with your treating doctors whether this can occur due to Statins you are taking for high cholesterol or due to injection Prolia.
Color doppler studies of lower limps for varicose veins and DVT or any other findings.
There is also a role of stress and anxiety causing leg pains called restless syndrome and be said to have this if all the investigations are within normal limits. If present, you need to control anxiety and stress.
Obviously the further management will be as per the cause found.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
