What Causes Severe Lower Back Pain Around The Kidney Area?

I have had a cold for a few days and after one cough today, I had a terrible pain in my lower back rightside kidney area. I could hardly move due to the pain, then my teeth started chattering very hard. I was immobilized and got severe pain if I tried walking, even moving. I ve taken advil and put camphor rub on it and it s slightly better. Just want to be sure you can t rupture something from an average cough.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Terrible pain in lower back around the kidney region could be a renal colic.
Renal colic can occur due to renal stones or stone in the ureter.
Cough can dislodge the stone and hence lead to severe pain.
However, cough is unlikely to rupture any organ in abdomen.
I suggest you to consult your surgeon for clinical assessment, ultrasound of kidney-ureter-bladder (KUB) region to look for any stone or any other abnormality in the KUB region.

Thanks and take care
