What Causes Severe Menstrual Cramps?

Cramps are excruciating, yesterday; the first day; to the point that only the fetal position was barely comfortable and manageable. I am a 34 year old female, tubal ligation was done in 2006; normally I have a lot of big clots and pain this time pain is higher and barely bleeding.
