What Causes Severe Muscle Atrophy In A Child?

my 15year old daughter has just been diagnosed with severe muscle atrophy on her left side from the shoulder down, no facial atrophy, she has a neurologist appiontmnet in two eeks. Please tell me what we may be facing? Are we looking at some form of motor neurone disease?
