What Causes Severe Muscle Cramps In The Extremities While On Metformin?

I have been getting really bad muscle cramps in my extremities for the last few months. At first just calf muscles, now calfs, thighs (front and back), and biceps and triceps and the muscles in my forearms. My doctor did some blood tests for electrolyte imbalances and everything was normal there. I do take metformin and spiranolatone for PCOS. I am 56.

Hi,

Most commonly it is due to diarrhea that metformin produces in 1 in three people who take it. Even if the stool is just a lot more volume, it could change fluid and salt balance.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
