What Causes Severe Muscle Pain?

I have been experiencing a throbbing (beating) muscle pain in my bicep for several weeks now. Im 55 years old. The bicep pain comes and goes throughout the day. It also started as a pain with the whole shoulder/arm but now seems more isolated in the bicep. Could this be something serious like a blood clot?
