What Causes Severe Neck Pain Along With Headache?

I'm 43 years old, active female, 5'3" 177lbs. I work out (weights and circuit training), walking, jogging and tennis etc between 2 and 5 times/week. For a few days now I've had pain in the right side of my neck radiating into my jaw, and should and headache in the back of my head mainly and the right side, but also all over. I'm not prone to headaches. I don't feel like a pulled a muscle. The pain feels like a warmth radiating. This morning I went for a run and these symptoms happened again--more of a pounding headache, aching pain on my neck and jaw on the right side. My chest feels fine, breathing is fine. Is this something I need to look into?

1. Most headaches in general practice are ordinary tension headaches and need just an analgesic and may be a tranquiliser, however in every patient of headache, one must check/test the following signs:

- check blood pressure
- check sinus tenderness and look for any focus of infection in teeth, tonsils & ears
- check tenderness over nape of neck or pain on neck movement: and since it is present one must check for stiff neck [poor posture/pulled muscle] AND neck stiffness and fever to exclude meningitis.
- Check with an Opthalmologist for any raised intraocular pressure and if any neurological sign is present as weakness of cranial nerves/limbs then refer immediately for C.T. Scan & Neurologist Opinion.

2. Till then apply heat or ice to painful area
. take over the counter pain relievers [ibuprofen/acetaminophen]
. avoid jerky/painful movements
.do slow range of motion exercises [side to side/up and down]
